It was only a solid rumor until now, but it is now official: Prime Video will have advertisements and its price will also increase to be able to avoid them.

Now that Netflix has (successfully) led the way, and Disney+ will soon follow suit, it was only a matter of time before Prime Video in turn offered a subscription with ads. And with what is proposed, the least we can say is that the leveling down of the quality of the SVoD industry seems far from over.

An offer that evolves, but without advantages for subscribers

Unlike Netflix, however, Amazon has not decided to offer a cheaper subscription to compensate for the addition of advertisements. Like Disney+, it is quite simply the main offer at 6.99 euros per month (or integrated into Amazon Prime) which will have ads added. Users who would like to avoid this will be asked to pay an additional $2.99 per month. An alert with instructions will be sent to subscribers a few weeks before the launch.

Unlike Disney+, however, for the moment the Prime Video offer is fortunately not separated according to the desired video quality (1080p or 4K).

Advertising is coming quickly to Prime Video

If certain countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany or Canada will only be affected at the beginning of 2024, on the other hand in France (but also in Italy, Spain, Australia and Mexico), we will see this new system arrive by the end of the year. An exact date remains to be defined.

To try to pass the pill, Amazon promises that its offer will offer “ significantly less » more advertisements than on classic TV. As an example, at Netflix it is around four minutes of advertisements which are broadcast before and during an hour of content broadcast. The official reason behind this new formula is, unsurprisingly, Amazon’s desire to be able to continue to offer original content and to acquire the rights to sporting events.

Prime Video

  • Fairly reasonable subscription price
  • Direct access to other services…
  • X-Ray functionality

With its subscription price always (a little) more attractive than the others, Prime Video is a very interesting SVoD solution. If it still lacks a few additional flagship series to be able to be fully compared to Netflix, the platform offers a varied and rich enough catalog to keep you busy for a while. It also stands out with its X-Ray functionality and excellent video quality which can help forgive a few bugs here and there.
