WhatsApp is about to deploy a feature that should relieve many users. Indeed, notifications from groups with more than 256 members will soon be disabled by default, no longer requiring manual control.
Last October, instant messaging drastically increased the capacity of group members, increasing the total from 256 to 1,024 people. If this function can be useful in certain contexts such as in the world of work, it causes an avalanche of notifications for their members.
No more constant notifications
If it is currently possible to manually disable group or conversation notifications on WhatsApp, the Meta subsidiary wants to make the task even easier. Specialized site teams WABetaInfo spotted a new feature in the beta version of the app that allows groups with more than 256 participants to be muted by default.
This concerns both groups that we join when they already have more than 256 members and those that exceed this threshold when we are already part of it: WhatsApp will indeed automatically deactivate notifications for groups as soon as they will welcome their 257e participant. Of course, users who wish to do so will be able to activate notifications on these groups manually.
For the time being, it is unknown when this feature will be deployed in the stable version of the messaging service, the developers having not yet mentioned it.
WhatsApp has been enriching its features for groups for several months
For several months, WhatsApp has been working to improve its tools for group chats. For example, the application now allows you to find a member who left a group within 60 days of leaving. It has also rolled out Communities, a tool with which it is possible to group related discussions in a dedicated place in WhatsApp. In addition to providing better organization, this function can also reduce the rate of notifications.
As a reminder, WhatsApp is the third most popular social platform in the world behind Facebook and YouTube. It has 2 billion users.
