If you’ve upgraded to Windows 11, Google is preparing a little surprise for you. You will soon have access to an improvement in the quality of video viewing. Formerly reserved for mobiles, this functionality will extend to PCs.

Google is in the testing phase of a new premium offer that aims to make the video streaming experience more enjoyable for users, particularly for high definition videos. This feature will be integrated into Windows 11 and will optimize the bitrate of high definition videos to make watching them more enjoyable.

1080p Premium on Windows 11

If you’re paying attention, you’ll have noticed that YouTube now offers a “1080p Premium” option when watching a video on the Edge or Google Chrome browser. This only if your computer is running on Windows 11.

However, the media Windows Latest reports that this feature does not yet work on desktop computers. After clicking on this option, a pop-up window opened asking them to subscribe to the premium offer… which they had already subscribed to. Slightly problematic. Especially since YouTube guarantees to have successfully tested this feature on several media. A support employee of the company confirmed that the tests had been carried out on several types of support: phones, desktop computers and Android televisions.

Improved throughput for better overall quality

If this offer ends up working properly, it will even change the interface of the YouTube player. It will only be available for 1080p videos and not for higher resolutions. If you want to watch a 4K clip from one of your favorite artists, this option will simply not be activated. You will therefore have to return very wisely to 1080p to enjoy it.

The quality of a streaming video is mainly dependent on the network speed. If you check the 4K option on YouTube but your internet network is slow, the video will be of very poor quality or even lower than a 1080p video. In recent years, the bitrate in 1080p is in free fall and some observers say that it is a strategic will on the part of Google. If the company reduces the quality of the streams, it lowers its speed and then saves a lot of bandwidth. Going back to more qualitative 1080p video streaming will therefore be a feature that will be exchanged for a monthly subscription.

Google made the feature official in April on mobile devices and plans to roll it out to all platforms in the coming months. Nothing is too big to make the consumer pay (a little more). It is certain that the company will expose itself to a good volley of criticism following this new find.
