According to a recent study carried out by the OnePoll organization, the results of which have just been published on Amazon, second-hand goods are becoming increasingly popular in France. Indeed, the survey highlights that the French are increasingly fond of good deals and affirms that 74% of them are able to move towards second-hand or reconditioned goods.

Since the Covid-19 health crisis, second-hand shopping has taken on an unprecedented scale in France that no one expected. A rise in power which is largely explained by an increase in prices across all categories as well as by a more eco-friendly consumption trend. If initially, this phenomenon mainly affected electronic products such as smartphones for example, in recent years it has spread to all sectors. The ranking of the Vinted site, a community platform for second-hand products, as the leading e-commerce site in France is proof of this.

It is in this context that the online sales giant Amazon launched its Amazon Second Hand program in 2022, enabling the platform to sell several tens of millions of products over the year. Furniture, toys, clothes, electronics, kitchen appliances, household appliances, perfumes… you can find everything there! A success explained in part by a survey carried out by the OnePoll organization in October 2023 among 2,000 people in France which reveals that nearly 74% of respondents are ready to turn to second-hand or reconditioned items .

Greater growth among young people

So if you want to avoid paying full price for your Christmas gifts, second-hand is an excellent alternative. In fact, almost half of those surveyed (47%) admitted to being completely willing to offer a quality second-hand item to a loved one for the end-of-year holidays. A figure which has more than doubled since they represented only 19% in 2022. The study also reveals that nearly 43% of respondents look for second-hand items first and that nearly 94% of them automatically compare the price of new on occasion. 39% of participants admit to simply refusing to pay the full price, especially when it comes to products such as clothing or decorative objects.

Purchasing behavior is increasing among Generation Z buyers, those born between 1997 and 2010, since 45% of them claim to own second-hand electronic devices and 36% second-hand clothing. However, if they are ready to take action when it comes to second-hand or reconditioned products, they are less ready when it comes to repairing a device that no longer works (21%). A behavior that is changing among the previous generation, Y (1980s to mid-90s) since 37% of them claim to have been in a “repair café” in the last year and 67% attest to having already followed a YouTube tutorial to repair a damaged device.

According to the study, previous generations are also inclined to second hand, 42% of generation an item is new when they offer second-hand (8% for generation X and 3% for baby boomers). A moov that young people adopt more easily, 24% for generation Z and 14% for Y.
