The Argentine security minister Sabina Frederic (55) caused a scandal. A pensioner and the attacker, who had escaped from prison a few days earlier, were killed in a robbery near the capital Buenos Aires. Thereupon Frederic was approached by a journalist about the crime in the country. You know about the problems, such as that the prisons are full, replied the politician. Frederic admitted that she was also a victim of uncertainty and fear.
The journalist then asked her whether one had to emigrate, for example to Switzerland, in order not to have to be afraid any more. The minister replied: “Maybe Switzerland, maybe, yes.” Then Frederic laughed aloud and added. “It is certainly much quieter in Switzerland, but also more boring.”
Lots of criticism and backing down
For the statement, Frederic was heavily criticized in her country. “If you believe that there is nothing to do in a country like Switzerland, then you are living in your own world,” said an opposition politician.
As she came under increasing pressure, Frederic said he had been misunderstood. With her statements, she meant that running away was not an option, the problems in Argentina had to be solved. Switzerland has solved its own problems, so it is now quiet there.
Swiss ambassador makes fun of it
And how is Switzerland reacting to the diplomatic incident? Cool and with a sense of humor.
Heinrich Schellenberg, Swiss ambassador to Argentina, tweeted a video from Switzerland Tourism that was shot a few months ago. The action hero refuses, on the grounds that Switzerland is lovely, impressive and fantastically beautiful, but there is neither danger nor drama.
