Armando Manzanero, the "master of the ballad", is dead. He died at the age of 85 as a result of corona disease.

The Mexican singer and composer Armando Manzanero is dead. The "master of the ballad" died at the age of 85 as a result of being infected with the coronavirus, after having been in a hospital in Mexico City for treatment since mid-December. This is reported, among other things, by the US news site "CNN Entertainment".

The Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (67) is quoted as saying: "Armando Manzanero was a soulful man, a man of the people. That is why I lament his death. He was also a great composer."

Manzanero has composed more than 600 songs in his long career and released over 30 albums between 1959 and 2014. It was also in 2014 that he – as the first Mexican ever – was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his life's work. Stars like Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra through to Andrea Bocelli and Christina Aguilera sang works by him.
