Excitement in Dortmund: During the DFB’s victory against Denmark and their entry into the European Championship quarter-finals, a 21-year-old man from Osnabrück climbed onto the stadium roof. The police illuminated the roof with a helicopter, but were only able to arrest him after the final whistle.
During the European Championship round of 16 match between Germany and Denmark in Dortmund, a man climbed onto the roof of the Westfalenstadion and had to be brought down by the police. He was arrested. Police approached and spoke to him, it was reported. A helicopter also illuminated the stadium roof.
Videos circulating online showed how the person was only arrested at gunpoint by the SEK on the stadium roof after the final whistle. The police announced early in the morning that the climber was a 21-year-old from Osnabrück.
“At no time is there any danger to other people”
According to police reports, he had already reached the roof of the stadium at 10:27 p.m. The police were initially unable to provide any information about his motive. It was also initially unclear how he got onto the roof. The police announced after the game: “The police have now been able to arrest the man. At no point was there any danger to other people. The police cannot provide any information about the man’s motive.”
The DFB team’s 2-0 (0-0) victory was already a special one: the match was interrupted for a good 25 minutes due to a heavy storm. Referee Michael Oliver sent both teams off the pitch in the 35th minute as lightning, thunder and rain swept across the Dortmund stadium. At 9:59 p.m. and after a short warm-up phase, the Englishman blew the whistle to restart the match. This was a “joint decision with the Danes and the referees,” the German Football Association announced.
The mood of the more than 60,000 fans in the mostly covered stands remained relaxed during the break. “Due to bad weather conditions, the game has been interrupted,” was displayed on the video wall. The players went to the changing rooms.
