Arrest in Latvia – refugee drama: main suspect caught

Breakthrough in the case of two Syrian refugees who were found dead in a van in Burgenland on the border with Hungary in October. According to information from the “Krone”, a prime suspect was caught.

In the past few weeks, the investigations had concentrated on an international gang that had dragged numerous Afghans and Syrians to Austria. Twelve people smugglers were then arrested in Austria and another eight in Hungary. On November 22nd, the investigators from the Federal Criminal Police Office took over the international search measures. On December 8th, the wanted man was searched and arrested in Latvia. According to “Krone” information, the man is a 19-year-old Latvian. According to a broadcast by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the 19-year-old was caught on the street and was completely surprised. He is now in extradition custody. On October 17, the drama broke out in Siegersdorf: 29 young men – all Kurds and Syrians – were crammed into a van by smugglers. Soldiers of an armed forces patrol noticed the vehicle right at the state border in Burgenland in the municipality of Siegersdorf. When they stopped the van, the driver ran away. The emergency services freed the refugees from the vehicle. For two of them, however, any help came too late, they had already suffocated, and the search for the dangerous network of smugglers has been high pressure ever since. The breakthrough came with the arrest of the Latvian.
