Arsenal missed early qualification
Pardoned Ronaldo crowns return with goal

Cristiano Ronaldo is back – and fits in perfectly at Manchester United. In the Europa League he returns after being suspended against Sheriff Tiraspol and promptly scores. While the English are still struggling to advance, Union St. Gilloise is already through, while Arsenal miss the early decision.

Veteran Cristiano Ronaldo has crowned his return to the Manchester United squad with a goal. In the 3-0 (1-0) win against Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League, the Portuguese, who was in the starting line-up of team manager Erik ten Hag, scored the final score (81st). Diego Dalot (44th) and Marcus Rashford (62nd) had previously put the Red Devils on the road to victory.

After his goal, Ronaldo celebrated in his new way, folded his arms in front of his chest, closed his eyes and stood in front of the stands. The Portuguese football superstar returned to team training on Tuesday after being suspended by coach Erik ten Hag last Thursday. The reason for the ban was Ronaldo’s premature departure in the Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur, when the five-time world footballer – once again only a substitute – had already left the interior of the stadium before the final whistle. After the scandal, the Dutch coach ordered individual sessions for Ronaldo with the club’s fitness trainers and did not consider him for last Saturday’s league game at Chelsea (1-1).

With the win, United now forced a “final” on the last matchday against Real Sociedad San Sebastian for a place in the round of 16.

Arsenal aren’t through yet

Belgium’s runners-up Union St. Gilloise, on the other hand, secured their ticket for the round of 16 early. The group opponents of Bundesliga leaders Union Berlin won 2-0 (2-0) at Malmö FF with goals from Teddy Teuma (10th) and Jean Lazare Amani (42nd) and can no longer take first place in the group with 13 points D be displaced.

Betis Sevilla and Ferencvaros Budapest are also in the top 16 after just five matches. With a 1-0 (0-0) win at Ludogorez Razgrad from Bulgaria, the Spanish cup winners secured the group win, while Budapest handed in a 1-1 ( 0-1) against AS Monaco. Frenchman Nabil Fekir (56th) scored the goal of the day.

Premier League leaders Arsenal, on the other hand, failed to qualify early. Coach Mikel Arteta’s team lost 2-0 (0-0) at PSV Eindhoven. Former Gladbach professional Luuk de Jong set up Joey Veerman’s opening goal (56′), the Dutchman scored the second goal himself (63′). Eindhoven thus reduced the gap to Arsenal to two points.
