After the fire in a refugee accommodation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the SPD leader blames the CDU leader Friedrich Merz. This is shabby.

There is no question that Friedrich Merz made a fool of himself with his statement on “social tourism” by Ukrainian refugees. There may have been instances of fraud here and there; several German local politicians report on this. But the CDU leader could not prove fraud on a larger scale. So he had to meekly apologize. The fact that his political opponents attack him for his choice of words is part of the business. Merz has to endure that. The fact that they call him an arsonist, however, goes too far.
