Andy Warhol’s “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” fetches the highest price for a work from the 20th century at Christie’s.

At the start of the spring auction on Monday at Christie’s in New York, Andy Warhol’s “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” from 1964 came under the hammer from a Zurich art collection. The image changed hands after just four minutes on Tuesday night: an initially unknown person paid $195.04 million for the 1964 screen print.

The price of 200 million predicted by Christie’s was only just missed. Even so, the Warhol artwork is the most expensive painting from the 20th century ever auctioned – ahead of Pablo Picasso’s work “Women of Algiers”, which was sold in 2015 for 179 million dollars.

The absolute record remains Leonardo da Vinci’s “Salvator Mundi” from the early 16th century, which was sold at auction in 2017 for $450 million.
