Artificial intelligence: an AI compatible with communist values for China?

Sébastien Le Belzic, edited by Alexandre Dalifard

Faced with the emergence of artificial intelligence in society, especially with the appearance of ChatGPT last November, China wants to develop an AI that reflects “core socialist values”. The objective is to prohibit this artificial intelligence from expressing the slightest criticism against the communist regime.

This is the technological revolution of the moment. Artificial intelligence, with the famous ChatGPT, promises to revolutionize access to information. However, one country is resisting the ChatGPT wave: China. Beijing, which has already built a sort of great electronic wall to block sites like Facebook, Twitter and even Google, is now announcing that it is embarking on artificial intelligence, but with respect for socialist values.

Reflect “core socialist values”

The Chinese government has just imposed very strict rules on its companies which are currently working on programs competing with the famous ChatGPT. Launched last November, the American conversational robot achieves feats and is able to formulate detailed answers in a few seconds. Beijing wants to frame this technology so that it reflects “core socialist values”. Arjun Kharpal, an expert on technology issues in China, tested the Chinese version of the program. “When asked questions about Xi Jinping or other difficult subjects, she does not know how to answer. She even says that she does not even have an answer. This clearly shows how these dialogue systems will develop in China”, acknowledges- he at the microphone of Europe 1.

The objective obviously is to prohibit this artificial intelligence from expressing the slightest criticism against the communist regime, from being a sort of propaganda robot. China already closely monitors its internet and media. Artificial intelligence will also be passed through the sieve of censorship.
