Google will allow teenagers to “ most countries in the world » to experiment with your conversational agent, Google Bard. The Mountain View firm has implemented various measures to avoid any deviation.
In September, Google offered its Bard AI to American teenagers, giving them access to richer results with additional information and links. It is now opening the experience to other territories. To use it, they must nevertheless be of the minimum age required by Google to be responsible for their own account, that is to say 15 years in France. “ Teens can use Bard to find inspiration, discover new hobbies, and solve everyday problems », assures the company in a blog post.
A learning tool for young people
“ Bard can also be a useful learning tool for teens, allowing them to delve deeper into topics, better understand complex concepts, and practice new skills in the way that works best for them », she continues.
For example, Google says teens can ask Bard for writing advice, suggestions on which colleges to apply to, and help coming up with project ideas. The company adds a math learning experience, so teens can research the solution to a problem, step by step.
The AI will also offer a new data visualization tool, also designed for the use of young users. This will allow the model to generate graphics from tables or data included in a prompt. Small downside for the moment, the conversational agent can only communicate in English. Google nevertheless promises the integration of other languages soon.
Preventive measures against AI abuses
Upstream, the Mountain View firm announces several security measures to help adolescents understand how generative AI works, and prevent them from being confronted with dangerous content. Thus, Bard has been trained to recognize content that is inappropriate for young users, so that it does not give illegal or age-inappropriate responses.
The company also addressed the hallucination propensities of extended language models (LLM). “ The first time a teen asks a fact-based question, we will automatically launch our answer double-check feature, which helps assess whether there is content on the web to support Bard’s answer », assures Google.
Before starting to use the tool, adolescents will also have access to several resources, such as a video, to explain in detail what generative AI is, as well as its challenges. “ We will actively recommend that they use double-checking to help them develop their information literacy and critical thinking », adds the company.
