Lhe artificial intelligence (AI) is profoundly shaping the landscape of modern conflict, offering a set of new capabilities to enhance security. From autonomous drones to advanced surveillance systems, AI is transforming traditional paradigms of warfare and raising crucial questions about the future of conflict, the place of humans in the decision-making process, and the ethical implications who as a result.

The nature of military data – confidential by nature and protected by necessity – can be an obstacle to the operationalization of AI. Secrecy, security, sensitivity can transform armies into fortress impervious to the repercussions of a civilian innovation imposing itself on contemporary theaters of operation.

Today, Ukrainian drone operators rely on algorithms to automatically correct the trajectories of their lurking munitions. The Ukrainian command uses AI to provide operational options. Soldiers take advantage of algorithms embedded in satellites to detect enemy movements. The robotization of the battlefield, coupled with the massive deployment of AI, opens a new era where the soldier sees himself augmented. The reality of this race for defense algorithms pushes armies to quickly operationalize these technologies to guarantee a significant advantage.

Talents and supercomputers

As in the past for the control of the atom, France, aware of the importance of AI in the military context, included in the 2024-2030 military programming law the need to master this technology, alongside autonomous systems. and quantum computing. However, these ambitions pose considerable challenges, particularly in terms of qualified human resources, transformation and relations with the private sector in a defense economy context.

To meet these challenges, France, with its academic excellence in the field of engineering, has a globally recognized pool of skills. But mobilizing these talents in the service of the armed forces requires an in-depth overhaul of recruitment, continuing training, management and career policies within military institutions and the defense industry.

The Ministry of the Armed Forces is already working on the development of AI algorithms and has integrated the paradigm shift brought about by artificial intelligence in weapon systems. This development must continue in line with technological advances in the civil sector. Beyond conquering talent, it is necessary to conquer computing capacities, servers and supercomputers to accommodate data, software and algorithms, essential elements for the implementation of a conquering AI strategy.
