On Wednesday January 19, 2022, the film Love is better than life, directed by Claude Lelouch, will be released in theaters. If the director was asked to cut scenes with Ary Abittan, the latter revealed in the columns of Parisian why he refused.
He won’t give in! On November 2, 2021, Ary Abittan was indicted for purple placed under judicial supervision. If since then, the actor is walled in silence, many questions arise around the release of his next films. While the third part of What the hell have we done, which was supposed to be released in January, was pushed back to April, what about Love is better than life ? The actor is indeed one of the headliners of the last film directed by Claude Lelouch, alongside Gérard Darmon, Philippe Lellouche, but also Sandrine Bonnaire. While in the latter, he plays the role of the seductive boyfriend, who flirts with several women, he was strongly advised to Claude Lelouch to cut the scenes with the actor in question. A request that he categorically refuses!
In the columns of Parisian, the famous director confided: “Obviously, the decision-makers told us that we had to change. I was told: ‘TV no longer buys films with Ary Abittan’. I’m not going to listen to those things. Besides, I am a faithful friend. My friends can count on me when they are bad. Right now, what Ary is going through is a nightmare. If he screwed up, he should be punished. But friendship is a word with meaning. So there’s no way I’m cutting a scene.“Two days earlier, it was in an interview granted to Cine TV Revue that Claude Lelouch had revealed: “For now, I want to believe it’s a story gone wrong, because in real life, he’s a charming, funny, talented boy. It would be a pity if a stupidity, whatever it was, damaged his whole life, it would be too expensive to pay. I count on justice to allow us to understand why the worst happened.“
Claude Lelouch: “I would like to believe that it was a story that went wrong”
Last December, in an interview given to Paris Match that Claude Lelouch had spoken about the Abittan affair. “I’m very unhappy, because it’s someone I like and who makes me laugh. I would like to believe that this is a story that went wrong, but I will side with the decision of justice. She will tell the truth. It is a fundamental value of our democracy. You just have to give it the means, the time. And save yourself from the media tribunal“, he had indicated. Assuring that this news had bruised him, he added: “I cannot and do not want to judge without evidence. So, I let justice be done.“
