As Apple is under pressure to open its App Store, a study commissioned by the company itself touts the competition

The content of the study tends to show that third-party applications are used more than those developed by Apple all over the world.

The various international regulatory authorities have been investigating for months the anti-competitive practices that Apple would put in place on its application store.

A study in response to the various accusations against Apple on its business practices

The American giant, which considers that these various complaints are null and void, chose the response through a study published on its website. This relates to the place of third-party applications on the App Store and was carried out by the firm Analysis Group, but financed by Apple.

The document begins with an observation: 99.99% of the 1.8 million applications offered on the App Store were created by third-party developers. Apple only offers about sixty of them, some of which are however installed by default on each iPhone or iPad at launch.

The study goes on to say that most app categories are only filled with third-party apps, such as travel, online dating, or social networking. Indeed Apple is not present on these types of applications and leaves the field open to independent publishers.

Regarding the categories where Apple is present, the study points out that the manufacturer does not dominate its platform and only represents a very small market share. According to the Cupertino company, other software is doing much better than it, regardless of the region of the world where it is developed.

For example, Spotify and Deezer are announced as being much more used than Apple Music, and Google Maps is twice as popular as Apple Plans, yet installed by default on each device. And we are not even talking about Netflix, announced as 35 times more popular than Apple TV + on French soil.

We can still retort that Apple has a certain dominance over other sectors, such as instant messaging with iMessage, well ahead of its competitors on American soil. However, the study does not give specific figures on this subject.

Finally, the document recalls that Apple regularly highlights third-party applications on the home page of the App Store and promotes some of its direct competitors on all of its thematic pages.

Despite everything, it is not certain that these arguments manage to calm the ardor of European and American regulators. They are still trying to understand the different reasons that led Apple to apply a 30% commission rate on each application sale or on each subscription to its Store.
