The man suspected of having injured for an undetermined reason with a metal hook seven people, one of whom seriously, Wednesday morning at the Gare du Nord in Paris was indicted on Sunday for attempted murder and remanded in custody . “The investigations will now continue, under the direction of an investigating magistrate, and will in particular aim to specify the exact course of the facts, to understand the motivations of the respondent and to shed light on the personality of the person concerned”, a declared in a press release the public prosecutor of Paris, Laure Beccuau.

Psychiatric disorders

The prosecution had requested the provisional detention of this man who claims to be of Algerian nationality and aged 31, but his identity “is not, to date, formally established”, according to Ms. Beccuau. Shot by police during his arrest, he was hospitalized. His police custody had to be lifted due to his state of health, then it resumed on Saturday and was lifted on Sunday at the end of the morning.

“He appears known, under several identities, for acts of home invasion, theft and rebellion, acts committed in 2019 and 2021 and would have been notified of two obligations to leave French territory, in 2020 and in September 2022”, said the magistrate.

The facts took place on Wednesday morning, around 6:45 a.m. at the Gare du Nord, when this man “suddenly began, for no apparent reason at this stage, to strike a first victim with his weapon, a victim to whom he struck about twenty of blows” with a “metal hook”, according to a previous press release from Ms. Beccuau. Future investigations should, among other things, look into possible psychiatric disorders.

Another suspect released

In total, seven people were injured: two men aged 41 and 36, a 46-year-old policeman assigned to the Border Police (PAF) at the Gare du Nord and three women aged 40, 47, and 53, all immediately taken care of by the emergency services. Finally, a 53-year-old man, who left after the attack, was later identified by investigators, Ms. Beccuau said on Sunday.

During his arrest, the suspect was shot twice in the chest and once in the arm after a policeman from the PAF, in uniform and on duty, and another from the Ile-de-France network brigade (BRF), in civilian clothes and off duty, who were on the scene at the time, opened fire.

A man who may have housed the main suspect was taken into custody and released without charge at this stage. Another man, seen talking to her shortly before the assault, was cleared.
