Astro Bot: a VR mode coming to PSVR 2? We asked Nicolas Doucet

Astrobot is a video game marvel that entertains adults and children on PS5. The adventure is fun and crazy, so we invite you to take a look at our impressions: ASTRO BOT TEST: an extraordinary journey down memory lane. In the meantime, there is one point that upsets the VR community a little, there is no mode allowing you to play in virtual reality. It is during the Tokyo Game Show 2024 that we were able to discuss with Nicolas Doucet, director of the Team ASOBI.

Here are our questions:

GAMERGEN.COM: Having completed Astro Bot, we can say that the game was designed for “2D”. However, did you say to yourself around the table: “are we going to do the game in VR, in flat, or both? “.

Nicolas Doucet: yes, the question is asked. It was asked at the time of Astro’s Playroom (Editor’s note: the game included in the PS5), since Astro’s Playroom is the first time that we are moving from VR to flat. At that time, we had the option of continuing in VR or going flat. The reason we wanted to make a more “classic” game, which still has all its own difficulties, is that we wanted to introduce Astro to as many people as possible.

I understand the frustration. […] The thing is that with 65 characters (Editor’s note: in development), you have to choose, it’s one or the other. And you can’t do both at the same time. We therefore wanted to speak with a larger audience and behind Astro’s Playroom, it made sense to give ourselves a challenge, to make a big, more classic game. Knowing that in this type of game, there are not many platform games today, and those that are there are heavyweights, the King of Kings of video games. Getting there and saying, “We’ll try,” wasn’t the easy path either. The easy path would have been to make a VR sequel.

ASTRO BOT

GAMERGEN.COM: To please the community a little, is it possible to have a VR mode in Astro Bot?

Nicolas Doucet: after a game like Astro Bot Rescue Mission (Editor’s note: VR game on PS4), if you don’t do something that transcends that (Editor’s note: VR), in the end it will disappoint. I think players want that, but in fact, they want to rediscover the emotions they had when they played the first game. And if you do something that is a “small” mode on the side, it will disappoint. So in the end, if we’re doing this to disappoint, it’s better not to do it. We have always started with this objective of quality, rather than quantity or following specifications.

If we really want to surprise people, then it has to be done 100%. I’m a gamer too, so I absolutely understand… If we could do it, but with 65 people…

So you will have understood, the very small team had to make choices and our friends preferred to offer a quality, finished game, without providing anything extra to properly entertain the players. Stay tuned, we will bring you our full interview very quickly.
