Astrud Gilberto is dead. Her granddaughter Sofia has confirmed that the Brazilian singer has passed away at the age of 83.

Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto (1940-2023) has died at the age of 83. That has informed her granddaughter Sofia on Instagram. She must share the sad news that her grandmother is now a star – alongside her grandfather João Gilberto (1931-2019). The singer and musician were married from 1959 to the mid-1960s.

She sang “The Girl from Ipanema”

Gilberto became famous in 1963 with her first recording – the song “The Girl from Ipanema”. She was the first Brazilian to win a Grammy, one of the most important awards in the music business, for the song. Countless other publications followed in her long career. She also worked with George Michael (1963-2016) and James Last (1929-2015), among others.

Also the musician Paul Ricci, according to the New York Times, a friend of the family, confirmed Gilberto’s death. Ricci wrote on Facebook that Marcelo, the singer’s son, had asked for the sad news to be published. “She was an important part of all Brazilian music in the world and she changed many lives with her energy,” the post reads.
