Asus ROG Scar 17 SE: a 17 ” gaming laptop with hormones

2

Asus Republic of Gamers is riding the wave of recent launches by in turn announcing its new features. On the program, the ROG Scar 17 Special Edition with a Core i9 HX overclocked to 5.2 GHz and a GeForce RTX 3080 TI at the TGP of 175 W.

The Scar 17 is a model that we know well, since we tested it a few weeks ago. For this Special Edition, the ROG team had to stand out from the Scar 17, and for that, they integrated writing and other symbols in invisible ink on the shell, yes my good lady! The ink only shows up in ultraviolet light.

The real novelties of the Scar 17 Special Edition are mainly inside, and especially on the side of its processor which integrates the Core i9-12950HX equipped with 16 cores and 24 threads. Asus obviously took advantage of the possibility of overclocking offered by Intel on this processor to increase its maximum frequency to 5.2 GHz instead of the original 5 GHz. The Taiwanese manufacturer pushes the vice by increasing the thermal envelope of the processor to 65 W, and up to 175 W in boost while Intel was limited to 55 W and 157 W. Hot ahead!

The graphics card is no exception. Asus has opted for a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti in its most powerful version at the moment, since it has a thermal envelope of 175 W to fully express itself. Obviously, with Nvidia’s Dynamic Boost technology, the processor and the graphics card do not have 350 W of envelope, but 240 W to be distributed according to the load. And to keep the components cool, the cooling system has been optimized, in particular with the use of a Metal Liquid-type thermal paste from Grizzly.

On the screen side, it’s a bit of a disappointment: the Scar 17 SE is content with a 17.3-inch IPS panel with a choice of 240 Hz in QHD or 360 Hz in 1080p. The integration of an Oled or Mini-Led panel would have been more than welcome on such a special model. The rest of the configuration is closer to the original version of the Scar 17, with up to 64 GB of RAM and two PCIe 4.0 slots supporting RAID 0. Connectivity includes Thunderbolt 4, USB-C 3.2, HDMI 2.1, port 2.5G network and 6E wifi. If the dimensions remain unchanged – 39.5 x 28.2 cm for 2.83 cm thick – the weight increases by 100 g to reach 3 kg. The charger, on the other hand, opts for a block of 330 W probably close to the kilogram, which has the capacity to recharge 50% of the 90 Wh of the battery in 30 min. A 100 W Power Delivery port also allows the Scar 17 SE to be recharged in the event of a dry run.
