On the sidelines of new creative laptops announced a few days ago, ASUS draws two new gaming laptops under the ROG umbrella. The first is ultra-thin, light and reversible; the second is a brute over-armed by Intel and NVIDIA.

Do you remember the ROG Flow X13? Well, ASUS thought a bigger, more powerful version would be a good idea. Thus was born the ROG Flow X16, which will soon join the ASUS gaming range. The device, which takes up the concept of its little brother, but with a larger diagonal and better components, is presented in mid-May with the ROG Strix Scar 17 SE. More conventional, this overpowered model brings together all that is best on this market in 2022.

ROG Flow X16: a reversible gaming that relies on finesse… and the MiniLED

At just 19.4mm thick overall, ROG Flow X16 is one of the thinnest gaming laptops in its class. This does not prevent it from relying on high-performance components, relying on low-power solutions from AMD and NVIDIA. The device can count on a maximum of an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS processor (35 W, “Rembrandt” Zen3+ architecture, engraved in 6 nm), coupled with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti. On the RAM side, ASUS announces up to 64 GB of DDR5 RAM at 4800 MHz and up to two SSDs mounted in RAID.

This configuration is kept cool by a new dissipation system developed by the brand. The latter has the particularity of focusing not on two… but on three fans. The goal? Cool the large NVIDIA GPU as much as possible, which can go up to 100 W of TGP (80+20W) on this ultra-thin model.

Of course, as with the Flow X13, this setup can be bolstered with an external ROG XG Mobile GPU for even more graphical firepower. The latter can indeed carry up to an AMD Radeon RX 6850M XT.

In terms of display, the Flow X16 is also very strong by sporting a 16-inch MiniLED, QHD and HDR touch panel in 16/10 format. The latter can go up to 1,100 nits of luminance according to ASUS and is limited to 3 ms of response time. Finally, there is a fairly generous connection on the X16, with a ROG XG Mobile port (including a USB-C 3.2 Gen2 socket that can be used independently), a USB-C 4.0 socket, two USB-A 3.2 ports, an HDMI 2.1 output, a micro SD reader and headphone jack. As for the battery, it also benefits from a generous capacity: 90 Wh.

The ROG Flow X16 will arrive in France in the 3rd quarter of 2022 at a starting price of 3199 euros.

ROG Strix Scar 17 SE: the most powerful laptop from ASUS… quite simply

The Strix Scar 17 SE (for “ Special Edition “) for its part takes up the basics of the Scar 17 2022, launched at the end of the last CES, but by further refining the formula. There are still two display options in 17 inches: a Full HD IPS 360 Hz panel or a QHD IPS screen capable of going up to 240 Hz. In both cases, 3 ms of response time are announced there too. The device also retains the same chassis and keyboard as the ‘non-SE’ model, but with RGB backlighting that now extends to patterns installed on the lower left corner of the cover.

The real novelty, however, is inside the chassis, with the appearance of the new 12th generation Intel Core i9 “HX” processors (Alder Lake). The latter can here go up to 65 W of TDP to develop maximum power on their 16 cores and 24 threads, clocked at 5.2 GHz in boost.

This beast of a mobile CPU is paired with up to 64GB of 4800MHz DDR5 and is backed by an RTX 3080 Ti that can max out at 175W of TGP (150+25W with Dynamic Boost, versus 125W). W “only” on the classic Scar 17). ASUS claims to have redesigned the dissipation system of its Scar 17 SE to accompany this new hardware, relying in particular on liquid metal (now applied to the CPU as well as to the GPU) and a new vapor chamber.

Far from the energy sobriety that we should be approaching in these troubled times, the ROG Strix Scar 17 SE is neither more nor less than the most powerful laptop PC from ASUS to date. It will arrive in France in the 3rd quarter of 2022 from 3399 euros.
