Aldi will deploy new technology in its stores. Called ALDIgo, the latter will allow customers to pay for their purchases without ever having to go to the checkout.
It is obviously not a question of leaving without paying, but rather of escaping the terrible ordeal of going through the checkout, regardless of whether this is traditional or automatic. For customers, everything happens in an (almost) transparent manner, since computers will be responsible for tracking and identifying the items in the baskets.
Aldi presents ALDIgo!
An initiative which follows Amazon’s recent announcement concerning the abandonment of similar technology, ” Just Walk Out “. Indeed, the American giant had bet big on this system, before very recently admitting that it was not sufficiently reliable, and that it still required a lot (too much) human intervention.
Nothing to discourage Aldi, which will therefore rely on technology developed by Grabango. Initially, a first Aldi store located in the United States (in the suburbs of Chicago) will host the ALDIgo system.
Do your shopping normally, under the supervision of a computer
For the CEO of Grabango, it is about offering Aldi customers “ an exciting new way to shop. » Concretely, the system allows customers to avoid queuing at traditional checkouts, by paying for their shopping at a small dedicated terminal, by quickly scanning their smartphone.
No dedicated shelves or carts, the customer does their shopping normally, the items being identified by a computer. Once finished shopping, customers can pay with their credit card or directly with the Grabango app, at the payment station located near the exit.
Aldi specifies that the system was added to an existing store without the need to modify the latter. The technology allows customers to exit the store faster, without having to wait in line or scan their items.
For those interested, the first Aldi store equipped with ALDIgo is located at 2275 West Galena Blvd in Aurora, near Chicago.
