At least 17 dead in Guatemala

(dpa) At least 17 people were killed when a pickup truck crashed into a ravine in eastern Guatemala. According to the police, 13 other people were injured in the accident on Wednesday, when the vehicle, which was carrying numerous passengers, fell down a deep precipice near the rural town of Jocotán.

According to media reports, the people had set out to collect aid from the UN World Food Program in the district town of Chiquimula. The accident apparently happened after the driver got out of the vehicle to fix a mechanical problem. The flatbed truck rolled and fell into the ravine. Most of the dead were women. A five-year-old child was also killed in the accident.
