An explosion occurred at an education center in the center of the Afghan capital Kabul on Friday morning. According to the police, at least 19 people were killed and 27 others were injured, the BBC reported.

According to initial reports, the explosion happened at the Kaaj Education Center in the Dashte Barchi district in the west of the city. Students took a practical university exam there, city officials said. It is assumed that the explosion was a bomb attack, it said.

Many of the people living in the area belong to the Shia Hazara minority, who have been the target of attacks in the past.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the explosion. A spokesman for the Taliban Interior Ministry condemned the attack. The act “proves the inhumane cruelty and the lack of moral standards,” the BBC quoted the spokesman as saying.

Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, attacks on civilians have been carried out primarily by the terrorist militia Islamic State. The Shia Hazara are particularly vulnerable to persecution and threats from IS.
