at least 21 dead in landslide

At least 21 people died following a landslide that occurred this week in northern China, caused by torrential rains, according to a new report published Sunday August 12 by the authorities. A mountain flash flood occurred at 6 p.m. Friday in the small village of Weiziping, near Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi province. “Six people remain missing” after this tragedy, the Xi’an emergency management office said in a statement.

The rains caused a landslide which “carried away two houses” And “damaged roads, bridges, power supply and other infrastructure”, had announced earlier the national public radio CNR. A hundred soldiers as well as firefighters were mobilized to participate in the rescue operations, “continuing” Sunday, according to the same source.

China has been dealing with very heavy rainfall and numerous deadly floods for several weeks. The torrential rains that have been falling on the north of the country since July 31 have already killed several dozen people.
