At least 50 dead after floods in northern Afghanistan

KABUL, May 10 (Reuters) – At least 50 people died and more than 100 were injured in floods in northern Afghanistan on Friday, an Interior Ministry spokesman said, adding that the toll could rise.

Heavy rains fell in Baghlan province, the spokesperson explained. He said more than 150 people were stranded and in need of emergency assistance.

Two strong storms are expected Friday evening, he added.

“The Interior Ministry has dispatched teams and helicopters to the site, but the operation may not succeed due to a lack of equipment,” he said. (Mohammad Yunus Yawar in Kabul; written by Ariba Shahid; French version Camille Raynaud, edited by Jean-Stéphane Brosse)
