The gun attack happened at a bank building in downtown Louisville. The suspected shooter was also dead, police said. Two police officers were among the injured, one of the officers is in critical condition.
Louisville Deputy Police Chief Paul Humphrey told reporters that officers “encountered an active gunman” at the scene. At that time, shots were still being fired inside the building. The two officers were injured in the exchange of fire with him. It is still unclear whether the shooter was killed by police or shot himself.
Witnesses leaving the building told WHAS-TV that they heard gunshots inside the building. Numerous police vehicles could be seen on television pictures. The FBI said its agents also responded to the shooting.
According to previous investigations, the man had a connection to the bank and was either a current or former employee. Further background of the act were initially unclear.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said two of the dead were close friends of his. Another person he is friends with is currently being treated in the hospital. “It’s terrible,” said the Democrat, fighting back tears.
