(Reuters) – Severe storms that swept through parts of the southern United States on Friday killed at least seven people and left more than a million people without power, authorities said.

A violent storm, which could bring heavy snowfall, is now heading towards the northeast of the United States, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The governor of the state of Kentucky said at least two tornadoes swept through the western part of the state on Friday, killing at least three people.

Authorities in Fayette County, located in central Kentucky, reported one additional death.

The governor of Alabama said that three people had been killed after the passage of the storm, without giving further details.

In Arkansas, a man died after being swept away by floodwaters while driving through a flooded street, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office said.

The governor of the state of Mississippi said Friday that storms that battered the state overnight had killed one person.

More than 1.4 million homes were without power in the states affected by the storms, according to data from PowerOutage US.
