Netflix’s response to employee sensitivities
Netflix has added an “Artistic Expression” section to the guidelines for its English-speaking employees, following complaints in October 2021 against comedian Dave Chapelle’s show, some of whose jokes were considered transphobic.
The employees were then not asking for the show to be taken down, but for an acknowledgment from Netflix of the negative repercussions that such jokes could have. At the time, Terra Field, an engineer, was suspended following a tweet in which she explained her disagreement, before resigning.
Since then, the message from the streaming platform has been clear: “ You may be required to work on titles that you consider inappropriate. If you can’t stand it, Netflix might not be the best place for you. »
Descent into hell ?
Lately, the American streaming giant has been caught in the turmoil. As subscription prices continue to rise, Netflix has raised the possibility of ads being integrated into the service at the end of 2022 and has tightened the screws on account sharing.
The massive loss of 200,000 subscribers, followed by the class action launched against the service by its shareholders, notably led Netflix to cancel several of its productions (including the series Funny in France, following a first season acclaimed by critics and the public). As a result on the stock market, Netflix’s share price has plummeted since the start of the year, falling from $600 in January to $190 in May 2022.
