At the last second – firefighter saves Maronibrater’s life

A firefighter in Carinthia’s Draustadt demonstrated civil courage par excellence when she rushed to the aid of a chestnut seller.

A firefighter from FF Perau probably saved the life of a chestnut roaster in Villach on Friday evening together with three comrades. “We had security at the Perchtenlauf, and when we walked through the Christmas market afterwards, I noticed a lifeless person in the Maronihütte,” says 28-year-old Anna Lesjak, who, unlike other passers-by, didn’t hesitate for a second and immediately came to the man’s aid hurried.CO poisoning sufferedTogether with comrade Oliver Kremser, who is currently training to become a paramedic, as well as Horst Müller and Markus Ofner from the FF Gratschach/St. Andrä, they brought Krzysztof Kopec, who was born in Poland and sells chestnuts on the lower church square, outside. Then they set the rescue chain in motion. Kopec had suffered carbon monoxide poisoning because the stand had not been properly ventilated. Kopec was able to leave the hospital quickly, and on Saturday he was even back on the lower main square to roast his chestnuts. “I’m fine again,” says Kopec, who thanks the “crown” to his rescuers.
