Historically acquired by PlayStation and Nintendo, the Japanese market is gradually starting to turn to Xbox. Indeed, the last two consoles from the American manufacturer are performing excellently on the Japanese scene.

But it must be admitted, Sony retains a hell of a head start!

A fairly logical loss of speed

Since their respective launches in November 2020, the PS5 and the Xbox Series have suffered from serious supply concerns. Blame it on the health crisis which never ceases to have repercussions on the world of tech and video games. Consoles are particularly affected and major manufacturers are struggling to keep up with demand.

At the moment, Sony is the brand most affected by this situation. It is still almost impossible to find a PS5 in stores or even online. This is a little less true for the Xbox Series S and Series X. Stocks of the latter finally seem to be starting to stabilize and this is particularly felt in sales of the machine in Japan.

Microsoft makes a big breakthrough

Thus, the site Famitsu unveiled the sales of the various consoles in Japan for the week from June 13 to 19, 2022. As in last May, the most recent Xboxes recorded an excellent result and even allowed themselves to pass in front of the very popular PS5.

  1. Nintendo Switch OLED: 22,860 copies
  2. Nintendo Switch: 19,907 copies
  3. Nintendo Switch Lite: 7,638 copies
  4. Xbox Series S: 3,423 copies
  5. Xbox Series X: 3,272 copies
  6. PS5: 2,371 copies
  7. PS5 Digital Edition: 664 units
  8. PS4: 18 units

Like what, Microsoft’s efforts in Asia are starting to pay off. Where that expensive Xbox One has been virtually non-existent in this territory, the Series X and S are doing extremely well. Of course, the PS5 remains far ahead in terms of cumulative sales since the release of the consoles in Japan. The Sony machine has 1.4 million copies sold against around 130,000 Xbox Series S and 108,000 Xbox Series X. As for the Nintendo Switch, it reigns supreme with approximately 25 million consoles sold since 2017.
