Switzerland defeats Kazakhstan in the United Cup. Victory is already certain after the 3rd singles, which Stan Wawrinka wins.

After Belinda Bencic and Marc-Andrea Hüsler, veterans Stan Wawrinka and Jil Teichmann were also able to successfully complete their singles at the United Cup in Brisbane. Wawrinka prevailed against the Kazakh Alexander Bublik in 2 sets with 6:3, 7:6 (7:3). With that, Switzerland was sure of victory against Kazakhstan even before Teichmann’s final singles match against Schibek Kulambayeva and the mixed doubles.

Team captain Wawrinka (ATP 148/protected ranking ATP 22) showed a strong performance against Bublik (ATP 37). Among other things, the 37-year-old hit 10 aces and did not commit a double fault (7/2 at Bublik). Wawrinka managed the only service breakthrough of the entire game to make it 4: 2 in the first set. The Romand did not concede a breakball to his Kazakh opponent.

Accordingly, Wawrinka was satisfied after the game: “I played very, very well. The preparation for the new season has been perfect so far. And the game against Bublik was played at a very high level by both of them.”

Teichmann wins in 2 sets

Switzerland also had the upper hand in the 4th individual. Teichmann (WTA 35) did not report any problems in the sportingly insignificant duel against Kulambayeva (WTA 441) and prevailed 6:2, 6:3 in 82 minutes. In the final doubles game, Teichmann and Hüsler defeated the Kulambaeva/Bublik duo in two sets.

There are 2 groups with 3 teams each at all 3 venues Brisbane, Sydney and Perth. In the preliminary round duels, 2 women’s and men’s singles as well as 1 mixed doubles will be played. The two group winners of the respective venues then play against each other. The winners and the highest-placed loser advance to the final round in Sydney.

In the second group game on January 2nd and 3rd, Switzerland meets Poland led by Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz. The group winner moves into the so-called “City Final” (winner of group E).
