Gosens tearfully injured in victory from the field
Atalanta Bergamo clinched their first victory of the season in the Champions League, but Robin Gosens had to pay dearly for the success: The national player injured himself without outside interference and had to leave the field early. The international matches could be in danger. In the second game, Zenit gives Malmö no chance.
For national soccer player Robin Gosens, the second matchday in the Champions League ended early. After ten minutes, the 27-year-old left the field in tears in Atalanta Bergamo’s 1-0 (0-0) against Young Boys Bern, apparently without any action from the opponent he had injured his right thigh. It seems uncertain whether national coach Hansi Flick will be able to rely on the left-back in the upcoming international matches of the World Cup qualification (on October 8th against Romania and on October 11th in North Macedonia). The DFB coach wants to announce his squad on Friday.
Without Gosens, the Italians in Group F struggled for a long time against the Swiss champions, trained by ex-Schalke coach David Wagner, who caused a stir with a 2-1 win against Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo on matchday one – until Matteo Pessina (68.) met. In the game, which was led by the German referee Felix Brych, the ball had already crossed the line once in the first half, but Sandro Lauper’s own goal was not recognized. Atalanta captain Rafael Toloi was offside. Bergamo split from Villarreal 2-2 on matchday one and have now been unbeaten in five games across all competitions, while Bern had been in ten games before the game.
The first victory was recorded by the Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg 4-0 (1-0) against the blatant outsider Malmö FF from Sweden. Claudinho (9th) scored the opening goal for the hosts, who had not won their last eight group games and lost 1-0 to defending champion Chelsea FC after the preparatory work by former Hamburg player Douglas Santos. After the break, Daler Kusjajew (49th), Alexej Sutormin (80th) and Wendel (90th + 4) increased. The 21-time Swedish champions also lost Anel Ahmedhodzic by being sent off (52nd).
