While Athina Onassis’ ex-husband Álvaro Affonso de Miranda Neto celebrates his family happiness on Instagram, the shipping company heiress lives a withdrawn life away from the spotlight. Her appearance in Paris in June 2022 even went almost unnoticed.
In 2016, the world of Athina Onassis, 39, was supposed to shatter into a thousand pieces: her husband Álvaro Affonso de Miranda Neto, known as “Doda”, 50, confirmed the separation of the former dream couple. Although the equestrian emphasized at the time that he wanted to fight for his love, the marriage ended in divorce just a year later. In 2018, the now 49-year-old went to the altar again and married the Brazilian TV beauty Denize Severo. Athina Onassis’ life away from the public eye
The granddaughter of the Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis, †69, has largely withdrawn from the public eye since the end of her marriage; appearances at public events are a rarity. High society was astonished when the 37-year-old showed up at a wedding in Monte-Carlo in October 2021. Yanna Darilis shared a snapshot from that evening on Instagram and commented on Onassis’ appearance with the words: “It was so nice to have met Athina Onassis in Monte-Carlo.”
After that it became quiet again around Onassis. When she took part in the Longines Paris Eiffel Jumping on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France on June 25, 2022, she went almost unnoticed, with only a few international media reporting on her participation. Athina wants to avoid a big stir at all costs.

After breaking up with Doda: Athina’s smile was gone
Athina Onassis seems to feel safest on the back of her horses; this is where she can show who she is. Without drama, curious reporters and above all: without her ex-husband. The world was able to see how hard the end of her marriage hit her in the years after the separation. Athina’s smile had disappeared; she looked incredibly unhappy. It hurts that her ex has already built a new life with a new partner during this time. The horse lover had to deal with this pain herself, away from the public or social media. Onassis hardly makes any official appearances anymore and was even absent at the beginning of June 2023 at the “Athina Onassis Horse Show” event named after her and founded by her in the French Mediterranean town of Ramatuelle – one of the most important show jumping tournaments in the world.
The difficult childhood of the billionaire heiress
Athina Onassis is the granddaughter of the Greek shipowner and billionaire Aristotle Onassis and has an estimated fortune of around 3.5 billion euros. But all that money shouldn’t make Athina happy. Her mother Christina Onassis died at the age of 37 after a heart attack caused by years of alcohol and pill abuse. At this point, Athina was only three years old and not only had to suddenly try to live on without her mother, but she was also exposed to a heated argument about her inheritance, which continued to spill out despite her family’s best efforts to shield her from the public urge.

Athina found support with her horses back then and since 2006 she has been competing as a show jumper in international tournaments. Her greatest passion was also to give her her great love: At the age of 18 she met and fell in love with the then 30-year-old Álvaro Affonso de Miranda Neto. In 2005 they exchanged vows in São Paulo and from that moment on they traveled as an inseparable equestrian duo the world. Even after Athina’s serious accident in 2012, it was Doda who stayed by her side. But all the ups and downs during their time together couldn’t keep Athina and Álvaro together. What remains is the love for horses, which everyone can now pursue for themselves.
