Series Etrian Odyssey made the heyday of the DS and 3DS for many maze enthusiasts and cartographers. We were more expecting a new opus on Switch for its return, but we will be satisfied with a collection of the first three remastered opuses.
Update: According to the Steam and Nintendo pages, the three games will be translated into French.
If you have time ahead of you
During the last Nintendo Direct, Atlus therefore announced Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection bringing together the first three games of the series: Etrian Odyssey I, Etrian Odyssey II and Etrian Odyssey III. All three will benefit froman HD filter just to enjoy a little makeover. If you don’t know the license, know that it is a “Dungeon Crawler”. It is a question here of going through mazes and mapping them in order to progress. This is of course accompanied by random battles that you will have to face thanks to a team of heroes that you can recruit and customize at your leisure via their roles and their skills to unlock.
This collection also offers 24 new illustrations for these characters as well as new difficulty options (the games are quite full-bodied, it’s true) probably to attenuate the grind phases a little. A new feature also offers automatic mapping of explorable areas, but honestly that’s going to be missing out on one of the best parts of these adventures.
Atlus obliges, we will be entitled to portraits from the Persona, Shin Megami Tensei and Soul Hackers 2 licenses as a pre-order bonus :
- Joker and Ringo for Etrian Odyssey I
- Half-Fiend and Teddie for Etrian Odyssey II
- Nahobino and Aigis for Etrian Odyssey III
Despite its very old-school side, Etrian Odyssey is a franchise worth checking out and we’re personally excited to see it back on Switch. Let’s not forget either the superb music by Yuzo Koshiro (Street of Rage, Ys, ActRaiser…) which brings a lot to the atmosphere of these games. To find out more, do not hesitate to consult our test of the latest opus released on 3DS in 2019, Etrian Odyssey Nexus.
Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection will be released on Switch and PC on June 1st.
