Atmosphere – One choice and many long faces

Anyone who was in the country house in Bregenz (Vorarlberg) after the first projection became known on Sunday evening could feel one thing above all: depression.

After an intensive campaign and a nerve-wracking election day, the candidates could hardly hide their emotions: but there was only real joy among the Blues. No wonder, everyone else had little to no reason to be happy either. So everyone in the red club office appeared to be composed, top candidate Mario Leiter didn’t show anything in front of the camera, but at times the Social Democrats even had to worry about their club status. The mood among the Greens was pretty dark. Although the dual leadership candidates Eva Hammerer and Daniel Zadra were quick to come up with analyzes – they saw the black and blue duel for the state governor’s job as one of the main factors for the green losses – there was probably a lot of simmering going on behind the professional façade the ÖVP – even though they had to accept losses of around five percent – is also a statement. Spread optimism, that was the NEOS motto on election evening – although there was an increase to be reported, it wasn’t really big. The logical consequence: a mild smile for mild electoral success. FPÖ – the only winner Christof Bitschi (FPÖ)’s grin was really wide – the only real election winner actually had a good laugh with a doubling of the vote.
