World number 3 Carlos Alcaraz will not be able to string together a third tournament victory in the “Caja Magica”. He lost to Andrei Rublew in 3 sets in the quarterfinals.
The ATP 1000 tournament in Madrid will announce a new winner for the first time since 2021. Carlos Alcaraz, the champion of the last two editions, fell by the wayside in the round of 8 – after 14 victories de suite at his home event. For the 20-year-old, Madrid marked the start of the clay court season after he had been unable to compete for a month due to problems with his forearm.
Despite losing the starting set, Andrej Rublew (ATP 8) managed to disenchant Alcaraz in the “Caja Magica” (magic box in German) after just under 2 hours. The Russian hit back vehemently after 4:6 with 6:3 and 6:2.
In the semi-finals, Rublew, who was able to beat a player from the top 3 of the ATP rankings for the first time in a year and a half, will face Taylor Fritz (ATP 13). The American ended the run of the Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo (ATP 22) with a score of 6:1, 3:6, 6:3.
