Defending champion Casper Ruud likes it on Swiss sand again this year: The Norwegian easily wins his first game in Geneva.
Jeffrey John “JJ” Wolf had little to report at the ATP tournament in Geneva. No wonder, because his opponent in the round of 16 was the “Swiss king of sand” Casper Ruud. The Norwegian had triumphed in both Geneva and Gstaad in the last two years and has never lost on clay in this country.
In the first set against Wolf (ATP 49), the world number 4 left no doubt that he would like to continue this series. Ruud quickly took a 3:0 lead and used his first set ball to make it 6:3 after just 30 minutes.
“Great to be back”
In the second round, the 24-year-old Wolf got into the game better and let his colleague of the same age much less. At the decisive moment, however, favorite Ruud struck again: he used his only break chance to make it 6:5 and a little later his second match point to win.
“I feel very good and the fans are great here. It’s great to be back in Geneva,” said the defending champion in an interview. In the quarterfinals he will now face either Chilean Nicolas Jarry (ATP 54) or Tallon Griekspoor (ATP 39) from the Netherlands.
Fritz continues after a detour
With Taylor Fritz (ATP 9), the second top ten player on Lake Geneva also made it into the quarter-finals on Wednesday. The American beat his compatriot Marcos Giron (ATP 74) after a set deficit 4: 6, 6: 2, 6: 3.
Grigor Dimitrov (ATP 33) had less trouble: The Bulgarian, who received a wild card, only needed 68 minutes for his 6: 1, 6: 4 against Roberto Carballés Baena (ESP/ATP 58).
Zverev – Wu live on SRF on Thursday
On Thursday, Alexander Zverev, another tournament favorite, will already be in the quarter-finals. The German (ATP 27) competes with the Chinese Yibing Wu (ATP 59), who is in the starting game prevailed against the only Swiss Marc-Andrea Hüsler.
