“Not to be excused”: Holstein fan kicks goalkeeper

Holstein Kiel is promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time, but a fan is thrown out of the party early: the man attacks the opposing goalkeeper while storming the pitch after the final whistle.

Fortuna Düsseldorf does not want to take any further steps after a Holstein Kiel fan physically attacked goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier. The second division soccer team strongly condemned the act after the 1-1 (0-1) draw on Saturday evening. “Such a fan attack against Florian Kastenmeier cannot be excused by the state of emergency in the Kiel stadium,” said a club spokesman on Sunday in response to a request from the German Press Agency.

By winning the point, Kiel had secured promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time. After the game, thousands of Holstein supporters ran onto the pitch to celebrate promotion. A Kiel fan attacked Kastenmeier when he wanted to thank the Fortuna fans who had traveled with him.

“No further steps”

The Düsseldorf keeper pushed the fan away, who then fell – and then got up to kick Kastenmeier from behind with great force in the back of the knee. Kastenmeier positioned himself in front of the fan but refrained from reacting. A steward quickly came over and took the keel trailer away.

The incident can be seen in a video shared on social media platform X. “Since the security service was there immediately, we will refrain from taking any further steps in this matter in consultation with our player,” the Fortuna spokesman continued. There has been no public reaction to the incident from Holstein Kiel. In addition, the promotion celebrations in and around the stadium took place peacefully without any major incidents, according to the police.

Holstein Kiel was promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time in its club history on Saturday evening – as the first club from Schleswig-Holstein ever. Fortuna Düsseldorf also still has a chance of promotion through relegation against the third-bottom team in the Bundesliga.
