Not all heroes wear capes. Thursday November 23, 2023, a man, armed with a knife, attacked several people in the streets of Dublin, Ireland. It was more precisely next to a school, in the Parnell Square East district, that the events took place. Five people were rushed to hospital: a man, a woman and three young children. According to several witnesses, the attacker was disarmed and then immobilized by people present in the street. Among them, there was Alan, a 17-year-old French boy. A final year student at Bazeilles high school, in the Ardennes, he has been in Dublin since October to do an internship in a restaurant. As he walked around, Alan quickly realized something was wrong and he didn’t hesitate for a second before lunging at the man. After disarming him, he placed the knife on the ground and remained nearby while waiting for law enforcement to arrive. A heroic act which was praised by Leo Varadkar, the Irish Prime Minister.

By disarming the assailant, which caused him to be injured in the hand and face, Alan didn’t think become one of the heroes of this attack. An act which was praised by Emmanuel Macron and Gabriel Attal, the Minister of Education, who were both able to speak with Alan by telephone. There was also Éric Evrard, the principal of the high school where the teenager attended school, who spoke. “We are very proud of our student,” he said before continuing: “The student is doing well and will continue his internship”. On Instagramit was the Spitalfields establishment, the restaurant where Alan did his internship, which mentioned the facts. “He was one of the brave heroes who managed to disarm the schoolboy attacker yesterday in Dublin on his way to work“, can we read in the caption of a photo of Alan. Messages which highlight the impressive bravery shown by the teenager.
