At the end of the mourning period for the deceased Masha Amini, violence broke out again in Iran. In the city of Shiraz, three attackers opened fire on pilgrims at a shrine from a car, the state news agency IRNA reports. At least 15 people are said to have been killed and dozens injured in the attack.

The police arrested two of the perpetrators, and the third is still being sought. The news agency blamed Sunni extremists for the attack. In the meantime, the terrorist organization IS has claimed responsibility for the attack. The majority of Muslims in Iran belong to the Shia faith.

Riots at the grave of Masha Amini

In addition to the attack in the city of Shiraz, according to eyewitnesses, security forces shot at mourners at Masha Amini’s grave. Dozens of people are said to have been arrested.

The death of the 22-year-old in police custody triggered the current wave of protests against the Iranian government. The semi-state news agency Insa reported that around 10,000 people took part on the last day of the traditional 40-day period of mourning. Despite a major police operation, the mourners marched to the cemetery.
