“Attack on Democracy”
FDP politician complains about Kretschmann

At the FDP Dreikönigstreffen the Baden-Württemberg parliamentary group leader Rülke buttoned Prime Minister Kretschmann. The liberal accuses the Greens of wanting to “undermine parliamentary democracy and go back to authoritarian structures”.

The leader of the FDP parliamentary group in Baden-Württemberg, Hans-Ulrich Rülke, has accused Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann of an attack on democracy. Kretschmann said that one had to discuss disproportionate measures in the fight against the corona pandemic, criticized Rülke at the traditional Epiphany meeting of the FDP. If the Green also declares that hyper-liberalism must be put to the test, then that is, on closer inspection, an “attack on liberal democracy and the constitutional norms of this country”.

“Someone wants to overturn parliamentary democracy and go back to authoritarian structures,” said Rülke. In an interview in the summer of 2021, Kretschmann suggested enabling tough interventions in civil liberties in order to get pandemics under control more quickly. After severe criticism of his statements, he said that he regretted that the interview had led to “misunderstandings” – and that he would never question the principle of proportionality. In one Interview with the daily newspaper “taz” Kretschmann had said at the end of December that one should perhaps reconsider “the whole of hyper-liberalism”.

Rülke was criticized on Twitter for his statements. “A small note: the FDP program is not the constitution,” wrote the vice-federal chairwoman of the Greens, Ricarda Lang. SPD general secretary Kevin Kühnert commented on a tweet from the FDP: “No. I think that’s probably not true.” The Baden-Württemberg Green Finance Minister Danyal Bayaz wrote: “By the way, #Hyperliberalism also includes simply knocking out any nonsense. Open the window at # 3K22!”
