Attack on Titan: Everything you need to know about powers in the animated series

While the animated series has made its return to simulcast every Sunday, discover a summary guide to powers in “Attack on Titan”!

The final season of Attack on Titan made its big comeback last Sunday, on the occasion of a recovery episode offered by the Wakanim and Crunchyroll platforms. Among the most popular Japanese anime series of the last ten years, the television adaptation of Hajime Isayama’s manga (Pika editions) once again confirms its status as a true global pop cultural phenomenon.

Before discovering the long-awaited finale of the series in the coming weeks, here is a summary of the use of titanic powers.

BECOME A TITAN

MAPPA

There are only two ways to become a titan. The first is the administration of a serum designed by the Mahr Empire, reserved for Eldian prisoners sent by air to the Isle of Paradise. This substance can also be found through clandestine networks; thus, Levi had been given a syringe by his mentor Kenny Ackermann, a vaccine which he decided to administer to Armin after the battle for the reconquest of Wall Maria.

Besides the serum, there is another way to become a titan. If an Eldian consumes the cerebrospinal fluid of a being holding titanic powers, this one will be able to transform against his will if a descendant of the royal line decides to use his “cry”. A method used in particular by Sieg Jäger during his return to Paradise, after having been taken prisoner by Levi during the battle of Revelio.

TO TURN INTO A TITAN

MAPPA

Only those with Primordial powers can transform, while normal Titans cannot change their appearance to become human again. In order to use their powers, the Primordials have only to bleed, a method of little consequence for them since the transformation into a Titan heals all their wounds, including the most serious (amputated limbs, burns, etc.).

Remember that obtaining titanic powers is not without consequences: we know that the Primordials see their life expectancy shortened to thirteen years after obtaining their powers. It is however not specified if this point applies to all the Titans, or only to the Primodials.

RECOVER THE POWERS OF A PRIMORDIAL TITAN

MAPPA

Becoming a Primordial Titan also implies some very specific conditions. The first requires being a Titan beforehand, although it is a priori possible to inherit one of the nine powers at birth, if a holder dies without his ability being recovered by someone else (in theory at least, since it was never shown as is in the series).

Once you have become a Titan, therefore, it is possible to become Primordial on the condition of consuming the cerebrospinal fluid of its holder, who must also die so that his power can be recovered. The most effective way to steal the power of one of the nine Primordials remains to devour him in his human form.

It should be noted that the primordial abilities can be combined, as proven by Eren Jäger, holder of the skills of the Titan Assailant but also of the Titan Hammer.
