Attack with six rockets?: Moscow reports shelling of Kakhovka dam

Six missile attack?
Moscow reports shelling of Kakhovka dam

Since the beginning of the war, Russian troops have occupied the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station and the dam of the same name in southern Ukraine. As early as August, the Ukrainian army allegedly rendered the dam’s car bridge unusable by means of targeted shelling. According to Russia, further attacks are now taking place.

According to Russian sources, the Kakhovka dam in the Russian-held region of Cherson was damaged by a Ukrainian attack. At 10 a.m. (9 a.m. CET) there was an attack with “six HIMARS rockets”, Russian news agencies quote local rescue services as saying. A rocket hit a lock on the Kachowka dam, it said. The information cannot be independently verified.

The dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station and the reservoir of the same name are located on the Dnipro above the city of Cherson in southern Ukraine, which is occupied by Russian troops. The barrier structure is several kilometers long and is currently controlled by Russian troops. In recent weeks, Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of wanting to destroy the dam. Accordingly, Russian forces mined the dam to stop the Ukrainian counter-offensive in Cherson with the tidal wave.

“According to our information, the units and the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station were mined by Russian terrorists,” Zelenskyy said in a video message in mid-October. Should the dam break, 80 settlements, including the city of Kherson, would be flooded. “The North Crimean Canal would simply disappear,” warned the Ukrainian head of state. Moscow denies the Ukrainian allegations.

According to their own statements, the Ukrainian military had already rendered the dam’s car bridge unusable in August by means of targeted fire from rocket and artillery units. It is said to have been an important transport route for Russian troops for supplies.
