Ukrainian civilians die under Russian shelling

While politicians and diplomats are discussing the war at the security conference in Munich, the killing and dying in Ukraine continues. Several civilians are killed in Russian attacks. Both sides report inflicting heavy casualties on opposing military forces.

Shortly before the first anniversary of its attack on Ukraine, Russia again launched massive shelling of Ukrainian towns and villages over the weekend. In the Kherson region of southern Ukraine, three adults from a single family were killed by artillery fire, according to local authorities. A 13-year-old boy was injured, the regional military administration said. Another child of the family in the village of Burhunka was miraculously unharmed.

Next Friday it will be exactly one year since Russia attacked the neighboring country – despite all protestations to the contrary. In many other regions of Ukraine, too, war has long been part of everyday life. On Tuesday, Russia’s Putin wants to address the Russian nation in a speech. At the same time, US President Joe Biden is expected in Poland, Ukraine’s western ally and neighbor.

The Defense Ministry in Moscow has confirmed a rocket attack on a Ukrainian military facility in the city of Khmelnytskyi – far from the western front. The position of a combat drone regiment was destroyed there on Saturday. The Ukrainian authorities reported the hit on a military object without further details. In many cases, the information from the combat zones can hardly be verified by an independent party. .

Girl killed by Ukrainian shelling, Russia says

On Sunday morning there were air alerts in many places in Ukraine. According to local authorities, several Russian projectiles hit the city of Druzhkivka in eastern Ukraine on Sunday night. Two residential buildings were damaged, said the governor of the contested Donetsk region, Pavlo Kyrylenko. Initially, he did not provide any information about injuries or fatalities. Druzhkivka is far behind the front, but is still being repeatedly fired at with rockets, Kyrylenko wrote on Telegram. According to a report by the “Ukraiinska Pravda” news portal, a total of eight Ukrainian administrative areas have been shelled since Saturday. This also included the Sumy, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions – all close to the front.

On the Russian side, according to the authorities, a 12-year-old girl was killed by artillery fire from Ukrainian shells in the border region in Belgorod. The governor of the Belgorod region Vyacheslav Gladkov said that the girl was fatally wounded by a bullet in a village in the region. Independent media reported that several houses and cars were damaged in the shelling.

According to Gladkow, there was also shelling in other towns in the area, some of which hit electrical lines. The authorities in the border regions, including Kursk and Bryansk, have repeatedly complained of shelling from the enemy side since the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. Many people have died, there have been injuries and there has been destruction.

Prigozhin and Kadyrov united

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia’s military suffered high casualties in the fighting in eastern Donbass. The situation there is “very complicated,” he says in his evening video address. Ukraine is inflicting “extraordinarily high losses” on the invaders. Selenskyj named several places in the region where heavy fighting has been raging for months.

In its account, the Moscow Ministry of Defense highlighted Russian attacks in the direction of Kupyansk and Liman. High numbers of soldiers and material lost in Ukraine were mentioned, but these cannot be independently confirmed. On the other hand, the Russian attacks on the city of Bakhmut, in which mainly armed men from the Wagner mercenary troupe were used, were not mentioned. There, the Ukrainian defenders are under heavy pressure.

Chechen ruler Ramzan Kadyrov, on the other hand, praised the Wagner mercenary group and its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin for their work in Ukraine. The Wagner units achieved “impressive successes,” Kadyrov wrote on his Telegram channel. He also wants to set up a mercenary force once he is no longer in government office. A photo showed Kadyrov together with Prigozhin: The solidarity can be seen as a signal – both are loyal to Putin, but are critics of the military leadership.
