Attempted rip-off – Fraudsters rebuffed parents with a “daughter trick”.

Criminals who tried to trick a Dornbirn couple into transferring money had no luck. The scammers led the spouses to believe that their daughter had lost her mobile phone and urgently needed money. But the criminals didn’t get very far with the scam.

On Tuesday evening, a woman from Dornbirn received a short message from an Austrian mobile number. The scammers posed as the woman’s daughter in the message and pretended to have lost the phone. The woman should save the new mobile number and contact the alleged daughter under the new number via WhatsApp. After a brief exchange of messages via the new WhatsApp number, the alleged daughter asked that the mother should pay an invoice for her. Alleged daughter needs moneyThe woman from Dornbirn then asked the alleged daughter to call her, which did not happen. As the woman’s real daughter could not be reached on her real phone number, the woman’s husband finally went to his daughter’s home. She was extremely surprised. Neither had a new mobile phone nor a new number. And she didn’t ask for a bill to be settled either. She had only switched off her mobile phone. The parents then broke off contact with the criminals. The couple’s prudent approach resulted in no financial damage, the police report.
