Stories about the British royal family are popular topics in historical dramas. Series like “The Royals” or “The Crown” are absolute audience favorites. This drama is about the most popular person in the United Kingdom: The Princess of Wales. The Princess of Hearts was one of the most famous and beloved women in British history.

She was “Everybody’s Darling” and her subsequent accidental death is one of the royal family’s greatest tragedies. Diana Frances Spencer did not have an easy time in her life and especially in her marriage in the last years of her life. This drama explores her last Christmas with the royal family as a broken personality and how she finally breaks free from their clutches.

The drama “Spencer” will run on Amazon Prime Video from October 13th, 2023. This film adaptation of Princess Diana, who was born Diana Frances Spencer, features her last Christmas and the groundbreaking decision to separate from the royal family.

Princess Diana spent the last Christmas holidays with the House of Windsor at the Sandringham estate in the early 1990s. There, her own demons haunt her and she must make a life-changing decision. During her stay there she decides that she wants to leave Prince Charles.

Kristen Stewart (“Twilight”) plays Princess Diana in the title role alongside Jack Farthing (“Love Wedding Repeat”), who plays her husband, heir to the throne Prince Charles. You’ll also see Stella Gonet (“The House of Elliot”) as Queen Elizabeth II and Richard Sammel (“Inglourious Basterds”) as her husband Prince Philip.

A fable from a true tragedy

In contrast to “Diana” (2013), Oliver Hirschbiegel’s biopic starring Naomi Watts, or the Netflix series “The Crown”, director Pablo Larraín does not try to stick to the true story of Princess Diana in his version. Instead, many story elements are inspired by true events, but the film’s plot is largely fictional. He enlisted the help of Peaky Blinders showrunner Steven Knight for the script for Spencer.

Lerraín’s film adaptations of important women

“Spencer” wasn’t the first film adaptation of an important female icon. Larraín had previously focused on an important female figure in world history with his first English-language film “Jackie: The First Lady” (2016): Jackie Kennedy. The film tells the life of President’s wife Jacqueline “Jackie” Kennedy, played by Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”), in the days after the fatal assassination attempt on her husband John F. Kennedy.
