Windows users have to watch out for a new scam by cyber criminals online. As the security experts from “CloudSEK” summarize in a report, the fraudsters fake a Microsoft website and build it deceptively real. This is supposed to provide an upgrade to Windows 11 for users. Through search engine optimization, the criminals bring the page high in the search results.
If a user now clicks on the page, loads the fake upgrade and then installs it on the Windows PC. Further malicious programs are then loaded. These are designed to steal sensitive data from users. The software scans folders, the browser or even the cache. Crypto wallets should also be in focus.
Dangerous Windows malware: How to protect yourself
The scammers used the “windows11-upgrade11.com” website to distribute the malware. This has now been blocked and can no longer be reached. Nevertheless, caution is advised for Windows users who want to upgrade to the next version of the operating system. Other scammers can further distribute the software on other fake sites.
