Among other things, the wrestling king revealed in the “Sport Panorama” why he did not attack Pratteler sawdust.

After a week of “regency”, wrestling king Joel Wicki was a guest in the “Sport Panorama”. His triumph at the federal in Pratteln had brought eventful days to the 25-year-old.

Leaning back and basking in royal glory was not an issue for Wicki. In addition to the parades of the Central Swiss wrestlers in various communities, the triumphal procession through Sörenberg on Wednesday and various media events, he also took the time to train with enthusiastic children in Hasle-Rüegsau. “I’ve probably won a few hearts for swinging,” says Wicki.

Came to sport through my brother

As a little boy, the man from Entlebuch himself had a passion for the sport. “We always had Chilbischwinget in the back where the bad farm boys from different places met,” Wicki said. “My brother took me with him. Probably because I had too much energy.”

At the age of 6 he was victorious in one of these events for the first time. And despite his always rather small body size, the successes were not lacking later. At the age of 16 he took part in his first ESAF in Burgdorf and caused a stir two years later with his first victory at the Kranzfest. The coronation on Sunday a week ago is at the provisional end of the ascent.

The prevented «sawdust theft»

An anecdote told by Wicki on the show symbolizes the importance that the Swiss in general and the royal title in particular have for him. On the Friday before the festival, he was in the empty arena with coach Daniel Hüsler to let them sink in. With success.

On the evening after the victory, he and two colleagues returned to the scene of the action. “There was no one there anymore. We went to place 7 and got a handful of sawdust, »says Wicki. He actually wanted to take the sawdust with him, but he didn’t dare to show up at the celebration in the temple of gifts.

If you work through the middle of the day, the day has 25 hours.

For the passionate hunter and agricultural student, rest breaks are likely to be few and far between in the near future. Maybe he’s going away for a few more days, Wicki suggested. And otherwise good organization is worth its weight in gold: “Then it never gets too much. If you work through the middle of the day, the day has 25 hours.” Wicki can use a lot of energy these days, just like when he was a little boy.
