The park of Versailles is bathed in darkness. The moon is not yet up. Two shadows slip into the grove of Venus. They are the Cardinal de Rohan and a woman calling herself the Comtesse de La Motte-Valois. It is August 11, 1784. Hidden in the darkness, the couple waits. The man is impatient to meet the object of his desires. The countess, who is his complacent mistress, knows how to find soothing words to calm the cardinal’s impatience. The minutes tick away, endless. Finally, at the first light of the moon, they see a young woman approaching, dressed in a magnificent dress of muslin with polka dots. She shyly hides her face behind a gauze as light as the morning mist. However, there is no mistaking it. She’s the queen. It’s Marie Antoinet…
